The thefts took place between Thursday, Nov. 5, and Monday, Nov. 9, in New Canaan, said New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski.
According to Krolikowski, around 9 a.m., Friday, Nov. 6, officers responded to Clapboard Hill Road to investigate a report of two motor vehicles missing from the resident's driveway.
Both vehicles were unlocked with the keys inside. The vehicles taken were a 2019 Infiniti Q60 and a 2019 Audi A6. Additionally, the resident informed officers that a set of golf clubs, house keys, and garage door opener were inside one of the vehicles.
On Monday, officers were dispatched to West Road on a report of a stolen vehicle. The resident said that the keyring that included the car keys to a 2020 Audi Q7 was accidentally left in the house’s front door the prior evening, Krolikowski said.
The resident said that other than two car seats, nothing else of value was in the vehicle. The vehicle was recovered in Newark, New Jersey on later Monday.
Also on Monday, officers responded to Turtleback Road on a report of a stolen vehicle. The resident stated the keys were left inside the unlocked 2020 BMW X5.
A file box containing personal and business information, house keys, business keys, Swiss Army knives, a camping knife, jumper cables, prescription sunglasses, clothing, COVID masks, and an unmarked client location access badge was inside the stolen vehicle.
As of Monday, the New Canaan Police have investigated reports of 27 stolen vehicles and 43 thefts or attempted thefts from vehicles, Krolikowski said.
These crimes are probably being committed by gang members, he added.
As always, Krolikowski said residents should never leave keys or valuables inside vehicles. And to always lock all vehicles and homes.
